HAIR RESTORATION
BY DR JOHN E FRANK, MD
HOW IT WORKS
RESTORING EDGES IN BLACK WOMEN
In an easy medical procedure, thick hair from the back and sides of the scalp is re-implanted to the edges.
Depending upon activity level, most woman getting new edges are able to work the very next day. Once healed, the new hair usually begins to sprout again in 3-6 months.
Like moving a flower or small tree from one part of a garden, the new roots create hair that grows forever. Unlike a weave or extensions, the hair is your own, permanent, naturally growing hair which you are able to wash, shampoo and style.
The technique has been popularized for middle aged, balding men for over 50 years, but only recently have doctors discovered this wonderful benefit for African American women with hair loss.
Nonetheless, many women of color will benefit dramatically from medical hair restoration.

WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM IN THE FIRST PLACE
When it comes to treating hair loss, Afro Textured hair can be both a blessing and also a curse. Why is that? First, aggressive styling and straightening measures will permanently damage hair follicles. Let me repeat that: Aggressive styling and straightening measures will permanently damage hair follicles. I know this first hand, I have treated many people with Traction Alopecia and other similar conditions. It is not a mystery, there are no secrets. The hair follicles are depleted and the traction and other damaging products are the culprit in the majority of African American Women with hair loss. The moment we accept that fact, we become prepared to do something about it. On the other hand, the good news is that surgically replacing curly hair follicles has some of the best results of any hair loss category. Some other types of hair loss respond well to medications and other techniques, but African American women with hair loss have excellent results when transferring the hair. Yes, it requires technical precision and expertise; however the outcome is often superior.

WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM

Most African American women with hair loss (especially the Edges) is caused by a lifetime of straightening and styling the curly hair.

Whether the culprit is base cream relaxers, the hot comb or tight braiding, the persistent scalp stress leads ultimately to the permanent loss of the hair follicle. Doctors have designated many of these conditions with fancy names; however, for the most part they are Traction Alopecia and different variations of Scarring Alopecia.

These often misunderstood and under-diagnosed conditions are treatable under the care of an experienced hair and scalp doctor.

AFRICAN AMERICAN TEXTURED HAIR LOSS
I am always excited with the opportunity to evaluate hair loss from an African American woman. She is commonly wearing a wig or extensions and is quite shy about revealing her scalp and hair loss. It is a personal matter and unmasking the problem to even a medical doctor may take extra courage. Discovering the cause of the loss and an accurate diagnosis is the first step.
